Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania (in Swahili, Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania; in English, United Republic of Tanzania),[6] is a country located on the east coast of Central Africa. It borders to the north with Kenya and Uganda, to the west with Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with which it does not have a land border, since Lake Tanganyika divides them, with Zambia, Malawi (with which it maintains a territorial claim on Lake Malawi), Mozambique and to the east with the Indian Ocean. Its capital is Dodoma and its most populous city is Dar es Salaam, the seat of government and center of political power in the country. The name of the country comes from the union of the words “Tanganyika” and “Zanzibar”. The current United Republic of Tanzania was born on April 26, 1964, when Tanganyika, which had formed the German colony of German East Africa and then passed into British hands at the end of World War I, became independent on December 9, 1961 and the Republic of Zanzibar, which achieved its independence from the British crown on December 10, 1963, uniting into a single State.
When to Travel
Tanzania’s climate varies across its regions, but generally, there are two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The best time to visit depends on your interests:
Dry Season (June to October): This is the peak tourist season, characterized by clear skies, minimal rainfall, and cooler temperatures. It’s ideal for wildlife safaris, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and beach vacations in Zanzibar and other coastal areas.
Wet Season (November to May): While rainfall is more prevalent during this time, it’s still possible to visit Tanzania. The landscapes are lush and green, and it’s a great time for birdwatching and exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Currency
The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). While US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, it’s advisable to carry some local currency for smaller purchases and transactions. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments in urban centers like Dar es Salaam and Arusha.
Airlines
Tanzania is served by several international and regional airlines, with Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha being the main gateways. Some airlines operating flights to and from Tanzania include Tanzania Airways (the national carrier), Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Etihad Airways, flydubai, Saudia, Egypt Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Uganda Airlines, RwandAir, South African Airways, KLM, and Turkish Airlines.
Travel Tips
Visa: Check visa requirements well in advance of your trip. Many visitors can obtain a visa upon arrival in Tanzania or through the electronic visa system.
Health: Consult a healthcare professional about recommended vaccinations and precautions for traveling to Tanzania, including malaria prophylaxis if visiting certain regions.
Language: Swahili and English are the official languages of Tanzania. Swahili is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, but English is also commonly used.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect Local Customs: Tanzanian culture is diverse, with numerous ethnic groups and traditions. Respect local customs, dress modestly, and ask for permission before taking photographs, especially of people.
Greetings: Greetings are important in Tanzanian culture. Handshakes are common, and it’s customary to exchange pleasantries before engaging in conversation.
Hospitality: Tanzanians are known for their hospitality and friendliness. Don’t be surprised if you’re invited to share a meal or tea with locals.
